Roof or Attic Ventilation Systems
Roof vents are essential systems to have in your home attic. Otherwise, moisture could build up in your attic and cause your wooden roof deck to deteriorate, develop mold, and rot. It also prevents heat build-up, which can lead to fires or other problems that may cause damage if not addressed quickly.
Ridge Vent
Ridge vents run across the entire roof ridge and exhaust hot air from the attic to maintain a more comfortable temperature inside your home.
Soffit Vent
Soffit vents intake cool air and keep the roof cooler. They are installed below the eaves line with at least 12 inches of clearance on all sides to draw cooler air freely. And, don’t fill in those eave clearance areas with Attic insulation because if you do, heat will build up, creating an even hotter trap area.
Gable Vent
Gables located at both ends of a roof beneath the eaves are similar to ridge vents in the sense that they exhaust hot air and keep your attic from getting too hot.
Starter Shingles
Older shingles tend to blow off your house. Our starter shingle is specially designed for this purpose and helps prevent debris from building up, which can cause further damage to the roof.
Don’t confuse a Starter shingle with a 3-tab or dimensional shingle, but instead, it’s a strip of the same type of shingle installed slightly overhanging the eave for which there’s also a new drip edge. The next course of shingles will overlap part of the starter shingle- consequently leaving no exposed seam. It also provides overlap for the next shingle (no exposed seam). This allows the rain to flow off the edge of the roof without getting caught up in a seam while providing a stronger foundation to protect against shingle uplift in moderate winds.
Flashings
Homeowners who have an older home and suffer from roof leaks sometimes wonder if they should repair or replace their flashing. Flashings are the metal pieces that protect openings in the roof and walls, such as vents, skylights, chimneys, and other protrusions. These metal pieces connect the roof decking to your home’s exterior walls and help prevent leaks.
Should Contractors Replace or Reuse Flashings?
Replaced Flashings
Sometimes, flashing will need to be replaced due to deterioration. If ice dams have damaged the flashing, for example, it may not adequately protect your home. If this is the case, you might want to consider replacing that piece of flashing with something sturdier and more solidly built. Replacing the flashing will also improve the overall look of your home, especially if you are planning on selling it. Be sure to choose the right flashing for your replacement.
Reused Flashings
There is another option for flashing replacements, and that’s to reuse those old materials. For example, if a pipe is protruding through your roof or wall cavity and you only need to replace the flashing, it might seem like a waste of money to purchase and install an entirely new piece. The old flashing may be salvageable if you remove any rust or other damage. You can do this by cleaning off all dirt and debris with a gentle detergent solution. Then, coat the old metal with roofing cement before reinstalling it. Just be sure to shake the cement can well before you apply it.
Quality Installation Practice
The roof is a system comprised of many components, not just the shingles. A long-life system requires water-resistant underlayment (ice shield & felt), skylights, attic ventilation, and flashings at peaks and valleys. You can quickly identify high-quality materials, but it’s a little harder to determine whether a roofer cares about a quality roof installation. The best shingles in the world may be used, but if one of the roof’s components is hurriedly installed, without properly completing each necessary detail, your roof is doomed to prematurely fail.
